Key Facts
- The total cost of ownership for a 1GWp production plant scenario located in Germany were calculated.
- A price of €0.25 per Watt peak for 380W perovskite-Si tandem cell modules and €0.20 per Watt peak for 280W perovskite single junction cell modules were calculated for a 1GWp mass production plant.
- The cost of ownership of the 1GWp module line for both module type scenarios is already at a competitive level with the present and future equivalent c-Si only module production of €0.31/Wp in 2018 and €0.25/Wp in 2020.
- The price advantage of the tandem cell modules improves further when the total system price is considered and the much higher efficiency of the tandem modules is taken into account.
Abstract
The cost of ownership of perovskite PV technology was calculated for the production of both high efficiency perovskite-Si tandem cell modules and single junction perovskite cell modules. The relevant cost data for manufacturing such modules was estimated by OXPV using their pilot production line process located in Germany and utilised in the cost calculations for 1GWp annual module production.
A price of €0.25 per Watt peak for 380W perovskite-Si tandem cell modules and €0.20 per Watt peak for 280W perovskite single junction cell modules were calculated for a 1GWp mass production plant. The cost of ownership of the 1GWp module line for both module type scenarios is already at a competitive level with the present and future equivalent c-Si only module production of €0.31/Wp in 2018 and €0.25/Wp in 2020. Moreover, the price advantage of the tandem cell modules improves further when the total system price is considered and the much higher efficiency of the tandem modules is taken into account.
Impact
Our CoO calculations clearly show that the business opportunity for large scale tandem module production looks very favourable, especially taking into further drop in wafer price and the upside efficiency potential for tandem devices.
Our calculations also confirm the commercial potential for perovskite only single junction modules, our calculated cost of €0.20 per Watt peak is competitive with the predicted future c-Si module price.
